Who runs the United Way of Phelps County?

The United Way of Phelps County is led by a board of directors, and other active volunteers who help the organization organize fundraising efforts and solicit gifts. There is one part-time paid staff member, who implements the wishes of the organization.

What are United Way funds used for?

The United Way of Phelps County funds help provide vital services to the people of South Central Missouri. The funds are allocated to our 17 member agencies. On the average, the United Way of Phelps County supports only a small percentage of member agency budgets.

Why should I contribute, if I don't use the agencies?

Because you are helping others who cannot afford to pay for services they or their families need. And because you may need the services of one of the agencies sometime in the future, in this way, your contribution is like buying insurance against some personal mishap. It’s almost impossible to predict that we won’t need a few United Way agencies in our lifetime.

Are United Way agencies just for the poor?

No. Monies contributed to United Way of Phelps County are distributed where they will do the most good for the entire community. Partner agencies’ services are aimed at helping all people, no matter what their income level. Perhaps you, a member in your family, or one of your neighbors or co-workers have benefited from the services provided with United Way of Phelps County funding.

How do you distribute funds?

The United Way of Phelpos County allocates funds to our 22 member organizations; the funds are used by these organizations to fulfill their mission and objectives in the community. The United Way does not distribute funds to individuals.

Can I choose who receives my contribution?

Yes, the United Way of Phelps County honors contributor’s designations; you just note on the pledge form what non-profit agency should receive your contribution.

How can United Way of Phelps County keep administrative costs so low?

United Way of Phelps County is fortunate to have volunteers who give unselfishly of their time and talent to this community-wide fundraising effort. Many generous local businesses donate goods, facilities and services to the United Way.
